The article “ Spatial patterns in brown bear Ursus arctos diet: the role of geographical and environmental factors” by Katarzyna Bojarka and Nuria Selva has just been published online in the journal Mammal Review. In the paper, the authors review publications on brown bear food habits throughout its range and try to clarify which factors (geographical and environmental) affect the dietary content of this large carnivore. They found that mean temperature and snow conditions were the most important factors determining the composition of brown bear diet. Populations in colder locations with more snowy winters consumed more vertebrates, but less invertebrates and mast. Climatic factors affect both the nutritional requirements of brown bears and the local availability of food; brown bear foraging decisions come out of the trade-off between them. You can get a pdf copy from the journal website or directly asking to the authors.
